About the Plant:
The Caraway plant, Carum carvi, looks like a carrot plant after it has matured and gone to seed. In fact, its appearance is almost indistinguishable from many of the typical plants in the Carrot family you can see growing wild. While Caraway is similar in appearance to other members of the carrot family, it has finely divided, feathery leaves with thread-like divisions.
Caraway produces multiple umbrellas of tiny flat white or pink blossoms on top of a vast web of green feathery leaves with thin, messy stalks. The plant’s small white or pink flowers have seed capsules that burst open when they mature. Caraway fruit (erroneously called seeds) are crescent shaped. Caraway Essential Oil is extracted from the seeds through steam distillation.
The fruits (seeds), have a pungent, anise-like flavor and aroma that comes from the complex essential oil. Caraway seeds are frequently used as a spice in breads, cakes, cheese and rolls, and the essential oil is used as a fragrance component in soaps, lotions, and perfumes.
Where It Grows:
Caraway is native to Europe and western Asia, and naturalized to North America. These plants are widely cultivated in Germany, Russia, and many Scandinavian countries, where their culinary use is widespread. The German brandy “Kummel” is made from Caraway seeds. Today, the most known place to receive Caraway Essential Oil is Egypt.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
