About the Plant:

From deep within the forest, the mighty Atlas Cedarwood tree stands as the king, spreading a powerful exquisitely exalted fragrance. Cedarwood is a pyramid-shaped majestic evergreen tree. The wood itself is hard and strongly aromatic because of the essential oil it contains, which is obtained by steam distillation.

"What the lion is in the animal kingdom, the cedar is among trees. Majestic and full of strength, Cedars stand tall in the loftiest regions of the mountains. They demand space for their expansive branches and stand undaunted by the elements in total inner harmony.

Cedar trees grow up to 60 feet high, and when undisturbed they may reach an age of 1,000 to 2,000 years. During biblical times, forests of cedar trees covered Lebanon and a large part of the Taurus Range in southern Turkey. The wood was honored as a symbol of strength, dignity, and nobility.” Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, Fischer-Rizzi. The Lebanon Cedar, almost extinct now, is very closely related to the Atlas Cedarwood. It was used to build temples and other religious/spiritual places.

Where It Grows:

Atlas Cedarwood forests once blanketed the high mountains of North Africa, being native to the Atlas Mountain forests in Algeria and Morocco. Today, only about 400 trees of this holy forest survive. Amrita® Aromatherapy is proud to have a sustainable source for Organic Atlas Cedarwood from Morocco.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

The word Cedar appears in the Bible frequently, as a symbol of glory, strength, and royalty.* This is often meant in a spiritual sense in religious texts. The old Cedar forest that once covered Lebanon was considered a sacred, mystical place, with many Cedar trees living between 1000-2000 years.

It was long believed that Cedarwood trees were the strongest trees so temples, furniture, and caskets were built out of the wood, thinking that they would last forever.* The temple of Solomon was built from a grove of Cedar Tress. Surprisingly, it still stands today on Mount Lebanon.

In Latin, Greek, Arabic, and Hebrew, the words for Cedar are some versions of “stand firm”, and “power”.* The word “Cedar” actually means the power of spiritual strength.* It was one of the first aromatics used as temple incense and has been used to heighten spiritual experience by American Indians and Tibetan monks.* Cedar was used by all the ancient civilizations in medicine, cosmetics and perfumery.* The ancient Egyptians prized this oil for spiritual embalming purposes while the French would use it to prevent hair loss.* “For many centuries, people came to pray and find comfort in the aura of these fragrant trees in the ‘holy forest’ on Lebanese mountain slopes.* The warm, balsamic fragrance filled the air, healing the traveler.”* Complete Aromatherapy Handbook, Fischer-Rizzi

Cedarwood is very aromatic, due to the high percentage of essential oil that it contains, and was used for building and making storage chests, as the odor repels termites, ants, moths and other harmful insects.*

Today, closet liners and accessories are frequently crafted from Cedar, and the oil is currently used in commercial soaps, cosmetics and perfumes, especially men's colognes.* The woody, warm and balsamic aroma is one that perfumers often describe as ‘masculine’, although in fact it appeals to all genders. And because Cedarwood’s warm, embracing fragrance has a profoundly soulful quality, it is often found in more introspective, personal perfumes and in meditation blends.* It is still used as temple incense in Tibet (and among Tibetan exiles) as well as having important uses in traditional Tibetan medicine.*
