About the Plant:
Himalayan Cedar tree is a symbol of strength and abundance, and is closely related to Moroccan Atlas Cedarwood. Both of these oils are chemically very similar. Both are grounding and give a connection to the Earth.* However, the aroma of the Himalayan Cedar is several notches finer and carries the spiritually elevating quality of the Himalayas.*
Himalayan Cedar, also called Tibetan Cedarwood, is a tall, evergreen tree that grows up to 50 meters (155 feet) or more in height. Aromatic cedar chests have always been used to store woolen articles. Bestowing the grace and silent strength of the solemn cedar tree, sweetly fragrant Himalayan Cedarwood chips are collected and steam distilled to collect the essential oil.
Where It Grows:
Cedar trees have played a central role in aromatics from ancient times to the present. From ancient Egypt, to India, Tibet, the Mediterranean, and North America, the cedar tree has been respected and revered. Today, Himalayan Cedar grows extensively on the slopes of the Himalayas in Northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Amrita Aromatherapy is proud to have a sustainable source from India for this mystical oil.*
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Deodara, part of the Latin name of Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus deodara), comes from the Sanskrit word Devadaru, translated as “wood of the gods.”*
The ancient Egyptians, who mastered the art of preserving their dead on Earth, meticulously embalmed the bodies of their rulers with Cedar Essential Oil, and placed them to remain, un-decaying, surrounded by the opulence they enjoyed while alive.*
Cedar is also mentioned in the Bible as a symbol of abundance and fertility.* More recently, it has been used in aromatherapy with good results in the treatment of chronic bronchitis.*
