Which essential oils are effective for cuts, wounds and scars?
The following essential oils have traditionally been used for cuts, wounds and scars:
- Lavender (all types except Spike) – this helps tiny cuts heal but is not that effective once scarring has occurred. You can use it undiluted in minute quantities on cuts. For older cuts, dilute it to 5% in in Rosehip Seed Oil (25 drops per tablespoon) before applying it.
- Elemi – this helps small fresh cuts heal but is not that effective in removing scars. It is more effective than Lavender in helping fresh cuts heal. You can use it undiluted in minute quantities on cuts. For older cuts, dilute to 5% in Rosehip Seed Oil (25 drops per tablespoon) before applying it.
- Helichrysum – this is the best choice for helping cuts (large and small) and wounds and scars (old and new) to heal. You can use it undiluted in minute quantities on cuts. For older cuts, scabs and old and new scars, dilute it to 5% in Rosehip Seed Oil (25 drops per tablespoon) before applying it.
Note: Spike Lavender shouldn't be used on cuts, burns or wounds because of its high camphor content. Rosehip Seed Oil is the best carrier oil to use because of its high content of tissue regenerating poly-unsaturated fatty acids.
