About the Plant:
A perennial shrub that grows up to two feet high, in the summer, Hyssop’s woody stems are adorned with dark green leaves and bunches of pink, purple or blue fragrant flowers while its leaves and blooms are best harvested for essential oil at the end of spring and the beginning of fall. The species is resistant to drought, tolerant of sandy soils and thrives in full sun and warm climates. Hyssop can be used in beekeeping for a rich, floral honey or harvested as an herb for cooking, or as an oil for medicinal uses.
Where it Grows:
Amrita® Aromatherapy’s Hyssop 1.8 Cineol is native to Spain. However, Hyssop is grown across Eastern and Southern Europe, the Middle East, and the region surrounding the Caspian Sea.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Hyssop has been well known cross-culturally for centuries as a healing herb, and modern science is beginning to uncover the roots of this ancient wisdom. Mentioned twelve times in the Bible, and known as an herb for purifying sacred spaces and cleansing during plagues and times of widespread illness, Hyssop has been regarded as a symbol of purification throughout human history and was cultivated to keep its loving healing nearby. It was often used in the ritual cleansing of churches and thus was planted in monastery gardens.

The bottom note leaves a warm, herbaceous spice lingering in a pool of almost-caramel sweetness. Amrita’s Hyssop 1.8 Cineol and Hyssop Decumbens Oils are both powerfully healing, but Cineol is by far the spicier and less grassy of the two scents.
