About the Plant:
Jasmine Grandiflorum (Jasminum grandiflorum) is native to areas of Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Northern Africa. It is a deciduous shrub which grows 2 to 4 meters tall with leaves growing about 3 to 6 inches long on opposing sides. Its distinctive white flowers, often with 5 petals, are the key source of its highly treasured essential oil. Jasmine Grandiflorum is more adapted to milder climates than other variations of Jasmine, resulting in a unique chemical composition which lends itself to an ideal range of therapeutic benefits. Its proprietary process of extraction qualifies as Certified Organic, which is very difficult to find elsewhere within the aromatherapy industry.
Where It Grows:
Due to the delicate nature of Jasmine oil, many cheaper versions are often extracted with solvents and classified as an “absolute” or “extract” rather than a true essential oil. Thus, finding a pure version is very hard to come by — but Dr. Streicher was able to find this version from Egypt. This version is a relatively exclusive option for obtaining a legitimate essential oil from this mystical flower. While Jasminum grandiflorum has adapted to milder climates, such as those around the Mediterranean, other species such as Jasminum auriculatum and Jasminum sambac are native to southern India.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Some of the earliest evidence of Jasmine use can be found in Ancient Egypt, circa approximately 1,000 BC. The flowers were used to decorate mummies, tombs, and statues, as well as for scented baths, perfumes, and oils for the living. Jasmine can also be found in Ancient Indian writings dating back to 300 BC. Tamil poets refer to Jasmine with great reverence; it is deeply praised in the Kamasutra. It is thought that Jasmine was perhaps the first flower to be cultivated solely for its aroma, but was quickly used for decoration, flavoring, rituals, as well as an aphrodisiac.*
Jasmine found its way to China by the 2nd or 3rd century BC and proceeded to grow increasingly popular. By the late 1500’s Jasmine oil was included in 16th century Chinese pharmacologist Li Shizhen’s compilation of plants, animals, and minerals containing medicinal value.
By the 17th century Jasmine had been distributed throughout Europe, where it was quickly embraced by the perfumery industry. Since then, technology has improved the methods of extracting the delicate oils of the plant without damaging its quality, due to excess heat or otherwise. This has led to broader and more sufficient understanding of its potentially therapeutic benefits.
