About the Plant:

It’s fitting that the lemon tree loves warmth and sun, because the lemon is such a cheerful and sunny fruit. With white star-shaped blossoms, sharp thorns on the twigs, and deep green leaves, the lemon tree is the epitome of a bright cheerful day. The tree yields about 200 pounds of lemons in a year, producing a mere one-pound of essential oil. An interesting fact is lemon essential oil is often produced by cold-pressing the peel from the green fruit, not the bright yellow lemon we know and love.

Where It Grows:

Lemon is native to Asia and eastern India. However, the plant is now cultivated in Italy, Australia, California, and Mexico. The Mediterranean climate and the Italian soil produce a Lemon that is preferred for its superior aroma.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

The lemon tree is said to have come from Arabia, arriving in Sicily in the 12th In 1493, when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, he carried with him seeds of lemon trees. This was the start of the large lemon industry that we have today.

Lemon was required on all English ships when they realized how important vitamin C was to prevent scurvy.* It was also used as a household cleaner and added to perfumes, soaps and detergents because of the fresh scent and its antimicrobial properties.* Today, many doctors use lemon for acute rheumatism, persistent hiccoughs, jaundice and excesses heart palpitation.*
