About the Plant:
Lemon Spatafora is cold-pressed from the peel of the lemon. Its aroma is well-known for being citrusy, crisp, clean, and bright. The scent will make you long for a cool glass of lemonade. Lemon Spatafora is made from a hybrid of a juicy lemon and a dry citron.
The Citron plant is a straggly, evergreen shrub or small tree growing up to 4 meters tall. Considered to be one of the more delicate plants within the cultivated Citrus species. Citron is a tenacious citrus heart note with spritzes and candied lemon notes. This essential oil is reserved for the finest perfumes, colognes, natural fragrances, and scent creations.
Where It Grows:
Lemon is native to Argentina, Italy, and Spain while Citron is native to India and tropical regions. Lemon Spatafora came as an Italian specialty from Lemons and Citrons. This hybrid fruit called “Cedrat” can be found in Sicily and Italy. Amrita Aromatherapy prides itself on having Lemon Spatafora from Italy.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Like all citron-lemons, the Spatafora displays characteristics of both lemons and citrons. Spatafora has the growth habit of the citron plant and the flavor of the fruit resembles a lemon. The fruit is used whole (rind included) in the typical citrus salads, or sliced and eaten fresh. On the occasion of the Feast of Saint Agatha in Sicily, slices are sold in the streets. No, Spataforas are not lemons on steroids, although they are from the citrus family. In fact, these giants are almost all rind and pith, or "albedo".
Lemon Spatafora is possibly the first citrus cultivated in Europe and may have come overland from Persia on the caravan routes. Greek scholar and "father of botany" Theophrastus learned of the citron from the scholars who accompanied Alexander the Great.
Jewish mythology identified the citron or ‘etrog’ with the forbidden fruit of Eden.* It also plays a role in the Jewish Feast of the Tabernacles.
