About the Plant:

Lemon Verbena (Lippia citriodora) is a perennial shrub which grows up to 2 meters (6 feet) high with light green lancet-shaped leaves and small white blossoms at the tips of its branches. This is in contrast to other varieties of Lemon, such as Spatafora and (Yellow) Traditional, which originated in the Eastern Hemisphere and gradually migrated westward with human expansion. Thus, Lemon Verbena is a distinct but subtle twist on some familiar Lemon favorites, with its own classification as a separate species containing traits unique unto itself.

Many regard it as having the most pleasant aroma among all the varieties of Lemon. It is commonly included in herbal gardens due to its many culinary uses, such as in teas and food flavoring.

Where It Grows:

Its origins lie in Chile and Argentina, though it is now cultivated throughout Europe and Northern Africa. Amrita proudly sources its wildcrafted Lemon Verbena from France, though it is also cultivated in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Italy, or anywhere else where climate is not subject to extreme cold.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

In South American folklore, Lemon Verbena has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy for anxiety, digestive issues, and respiratory ailments, as well as for countless culinary and perfumery applications.* In the 18th century, it was the Spanish who successfully brought the plant to Europe from South America, despite previous futile attempts. This explains its other commonly held names “Lemon Luisa” and “Yerba Louisa” which are said to be named after Marie Louisa, a Spanish princess that eventually became the queen of Spain.

In Gone with the Wind and Little House on the Prairie, Scarlett O’Hara’s mother and Laura Ingalls both declared that Lemon Verbena was their favorite scent. Lemon Verbena has been widely used in perfumery within blends such as Givenchy’s “Very Irresistible” and many more.
