About the Plant:
Sweet Marjoram is a beautiful, lush, and green plant that can be found in home gardens all over the world. Aromatic and sweet, the Sweet Marjoram plant has dark green, furry, and tender leaves with clusters of small little white or pink flowers.
It is important to note that Sweet Marjoram is not similar to Spanish Marjoram (thymus mastichina which comes from the thyme family). Plants in the botanical family Labiatae– including Marjoram, Oregano, Lavender, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme – have a special fondness for dry rocky slopes, open spaces, and sunny mountains, preferring the median climatic regions around the Mediterranean Sea. The peaceful and comforting aroma is certainly a joy to use as it brings freshness and warmth to topical and perfumery creations.* It has a milder flavor than oregano and is frequently used to garnish salads, soups, and meat dishes.
Where It Grows:
Sweet Marjoram is a perennial herb of the Labiatae family that has been grown for generations across the Mediterranean and Western Asia. Marjoram loves growing in areas receiving full sun with light, well-drained soil. Today, it is cultivated in France, Tunisia, Morocco, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, and Turkey.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
The Greeks referred to this plant as the “joy of the mountains” and considered it a symbol of happiness. They enjoyed Sweet Marjoram for many purposes such as: in their cooking, on gravesites to bring the deceased peace, and for ailments of the chest, liver, and spleen.*
