About the Plant:
Rising majestically up to 130 feet in height and boasting a 2-meter girth, the Rosewood tree exudes an enchanting scent from its wood, wrapping all in its vicinity in a tapestry of floral aromas. Labeled as "vulnerable" due to its coveted timber and high linalool content, this delicate member of the Lauraceae family adorns itself with clusters of fragrant purple blossoms and verdant leaves. These leaves harbor approximately 73% to 78% linalool, a slightly lesser concentration than found in the wood itself.
Hailing from the Aniba Rosaeodara tree in the heart of Latin America's Amazon basin, Rosewood Essential Oil teeters on the brink of extinction but now undergoes sustainable harvesting from its leaves and branches. Revered for its sweet, rosy scent, this oil plays a pivotal role in conservation endeavors, combating the stark decline of Rosewood trees worldwide due to unsustainable extraction practices fueled by lucrative demand. With its captivating blend of warm, spicy, woody, fruity, and floral notes, Rosewood Oil continues to reign as a coveted ingredient in the realms of perfumery and soap-crafting.
Where It Grows:
Rosewood, also known as Brazilian Rosewood, originates in the lush, tropical Amazon basin where the wild growing evergreen gets to a massive peak of 30 meters while being around 2 meters broad. It can also be found in Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela, and French Guiana. Due to the heavy exploitation of the trees, very few are found within 20km of riverbanks, the only means of moving the trees within the Amazon region, making the production of Rosewood Oil decline. It is an endangered species. Amrita’s Rosewood Oil holds a CITES certification, signifying its ethical sourcing from Brazil. Only Rosewood with CITES certification can be legally sold due to the endangerment. This commitment guarantees sustainability for the prosperity of future generations.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
Once treasured for its rich linalool concentration, Rosewood, also known as Bois de Rose Oil, held a sacred place in the world of perfumery. Yet, rampant exploitation and outdated distillation techniques have pushed this precious resource to the brink of vulnerability. Synthetic linalool and Ho Leaf Oil from China have stepped in to fill the void left by its dwindling production.
Across French communities, the Aniba Rosaeodara wood was prized for its use in fine furniture crafting. Today, Amrita’s CITES Certified Rosewood Oil is ethically sourced from a plantation in Brazil, ensuring sustainability for generations to come. Traditionally employed by Amazonian tribes for treating wounds, it has now become a cornerstone in both perfumery and skincare, celebrated for its remarkable rejuvenating properties. Beyond its tangible benefits, its emotionally uplifting and calming essence makes it a cherished companion for meditation and a promoter of tranquil sleep.

Dr. Streicher Says:
Rosewood Oil has become very rare. Most of what is on the market has been extended with synthetic linalool and the natural part is commonly not harvested in a sustainable way. I had been searching for the last few years for a sustainable source of Rosewood Oil. Only a few weeks back I found a distiller in Brazil who has started a plantation project with Rosewood. The project is largely financed by the sale of essential oil. Amrita is trying to help her by marketing her oil. The price is fairly high because she pays fair wages to her workers to build a community around this project.
