About the Plant:

Yarrow, a perennial herb known for its tenacity, grows just about anywhere: in the grass, along the roadside, and in the meadow. It is so hardy, in fact, that some regard it as an invasive plant despite its aesthetic beauty. This, along with the way its leaves split into many feathery-fine segments, explains the scientific name millefolium which translates to “many segments of foliage.” It grows up to 3 feet high with a flower head made up of tiny, daisy-like flowers, mostly with a white or pinkish hue. Yarrow has remained a mainstay in herbalists’ gardens for centuries and is mentioned countless times throughout recorded history by virtually every known ancient culture.

Where It Grows:

Yarrow grows wild all over Europe, Western Asia, Africa, and the United States. Realistically, it can thrive just about anywhere with a steady source of sunlight, soil, and a little bit of water. It is cultivated mostly in Germany, Belgium, Hungary, and Yugoslavia; Amrita Aromatherapy has found a sustainable source for USDA certified Blue Yarrow Organic Essential Oil from Bulgaria.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

As previously mentioned, half of Yarrow’s scientific name is millefolium which translates into “many segments of foliage.” The other half, Achillea, is an ancient reference to the Greek warrior Achilles, who is said to have used Yarrow as protection for himself and his soldiers in the fields of war. Other ancient names for the plant included “Soldier’s Wound Wort” and “Knight’s Milfoil” for similar reasons. By the 1450’s it was used extensively for its known therapeutic properties, as is still done today.

In American ethnobotany, Yarrow is used by the Cherokee, Iroquois, and Mohegan tribes as a digestive aid and for reduction of swelling.* Chinese lore has said that Yarrow grows around Confucius’ grave and that its straw is the best way to cast the I Ching. It is also generally thought to balance yin and yang while facilitating unity between heaven and earth.* Later in history, Yarrow was used as a witching herb in western culture. It was used to both summon or dispel the devil and could be found in many Saxon protective amulets, hence some other names for the plant such as “Devil’s Nettle” and “Devil’s Plaything.”*

Yarrow Blue Organic Essential Oil has an exotically blue color and a fresh, woody, herbaceous aroma. This oil is the essence of an age-old medicinal, used to soothe and tone the body and mind.* Though the plant can be considered invasive to some, others have noted its therapeutic value since early mankind.

Today, it is used in a similar vein to German Chamomile or Blue Tansy Chamomile, but also possesses characteristics unique only to itself. With its broad range of benefits for the skin and hair, digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system, and its abilities to tackle pain, cramping, and swelling, one should not be fooled by the overabundance of Yarrow plants throughout the world; it is truly one of nature’s treasures.*

The energy of Blue Yarrow Essential Oil is regarded as harmonizing, with the ability to balance and reconcile opposing forces within.* This translates into the unique ability to treat conditions which seem to simultaneously exist, but contradict one another.* The Yarrow plant reflects these harmonically balanced traits in a number of ways — its aromatic profile also balances between contrasts as it is simultaneously sweet, bitter, pungent, and pleasant.

Yarrow has been highly regarded for its therapeutic benefits since prehistoric times. For millennia, its sweet, camphoraceous, herbaceous qualities have been used to successfully treat a multitude of ailments. Its unique aromatic profile helps to alleviate stress, dissipate anger, soothe irritability, and quell insomnia.* And even though its scent is quite pleasant for most, it also happens to be an antibacterial, antifungal, and a deterrent of insects and parasites.*

The synergistic qualities of Blue Yarrow Organic Essential Oil are used to treat wounds in the initial stages of healing.* Yarrow helps slow or stop bleeding and promotes regeneration of new skin with its cicatrisant and haemostatic properties.* It is even thought to promote hair growth, with encouraging trials to support the claim.* Additionally, it exhibits astringent actions which make it a perfect choice for balancing oil on the skin and scalp.*

As a carminative, stomachic, and tonic, Blue Yarrow Organic Essential Oil can help facilitate digestion and relieve discomfort.* It is also an expectorant and antiseptic which can help clear the body of excess mucous and toxins.* It benefits the circulatory system as well by helping to lower blood pressure, lessen fever, reduce varicose veins, tackle migraines, and relieve hemorrhoids.*

Much like “blue” chamomile oils, Blue Yarrow Essential Oil contains chamazulene; a chemical not naturally present within the plant but emerging during the process of steam distillation due to heat and pressure from water vapor. Chamazulene is responsible for the azure hue of these oils and for their impressive anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, and antiallergenic properties.* Blue Yarrow oil is also an emmenagogue which can significantly help with menstrual and/or menopausal pain. Lastly, it exhibits antispasmodic abilities that can alleviate stomach cramps and gall bladder pain.*
