About the Plant:

A perennial tropical herb, growing up to 3 ft high. It has highly branched, yellow to orange, cylindrical, aromatic rhizomes (roots). The leaves are alternate and arranged in two rows. They are divided into leaf sheath, petiole, and leaf blade. Turmeric looks very much like Ginger, with tall shoots and abundant elegant leaves, and is a member of the same botanical family.

Turmeric Essential Oil is steam distilled from the roots of Curcuma longa. These rhizomes are also used fresh or boiled in water and dried, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a coloring and flavoring agent in many Asian cuisines, especially for curries, as well as for the dyeing characteristics imparted by the principal turmeric constituent, curcumin.

Where It Grows:

Curcuma need heat to trigger flowering and thus do well in warm climates such as India, Thailand, and other countries in tropical Asia. The greatest diversity of Curcuma species by number alone is in India, at around 40 to 45 species. Thailand has a comparable 30 to 40 species. Other countries in tropical Asia also have numerous wild species of Curcuma. Various species currently utilized and sold as "turmeric" in other parts of Asia have been shown to belong to several physically similar taxa, with overlapping local names.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

The Turmeric plant is also said to have been used as early as 4,000 years ago as a medicinal substance as well as a spiritual and ceremonial object. Turmeric has been used in Asia for centuries and is a major part of Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Unani, and the animistic rituals of Austronesian peoples. It was first used as a dye, and then later for its supposed properties in folk medicine.

From India, it spread to Southeast Asia along with Hinduism and Buddhism, as the yellow dye is used to color the robes of monks and priests. In religious observances as a symbol of peace, health, happiness, fertility, purity, prosperity, and new beginnings. It is customary for Indian brides to apply a paste consisting of this “Indian Saffron” as a full-body exfoliant before the wedding day in order to naturally promote the skin’s radiance.*

In Chinese medicine, Turmeric was used for bruises, sores, ringworm, toothache, colic, chest pains, and menstrual problems.* It was also once used to treat jaundice.* Today, Turmeric Essential Oil derived from steam distilled Turmeric rhizomes, which are sometimes referred to as root stalks, can be applied similarly, while its warm, earthy, woody aroma can even yield emotional benefits.*
