About the Plant:

Imagine a stunning vine that can grow up to 100 feet, adorned with delicate white flowers. This herb, called Vanilla, is truly a sight to behold. It thrives in shady conditions but truly comes to life in the sunlight, branching out in all its glory. The flowers are a morning delight, opening up to the world, only to fade away as the temperature rises in the afternoon. Nature's design ensures that these plants are self-fertile, with the simple act of transferring pollen from the anther to the stigma. However, this enchanting process requires a little intervention to succeed. In the wild, the odds are stacked against the pollination of these exquisite flowers, with just a 1% chance of success. Such a delicate romance between nature and nurture.

Vanilla Essential Oil cannot be steam distilled. Only solvent extraction and CO2 extraction are possible. Solvent extraction has the disadvantage that minute residues of the solvent remain. Because of the nature of the procedure, solvent-extracted Vanilla cannot be certified organic. For these reasons, Amrita offers a certified organic CO2-extracted Vanilla. The certification also guarantees that it is 100% natural and unadulterated.

Where It Grows:

Vanilla planifolia, a tropical plant with origins in the neotropical realm, is now known to be native to a broader range of regions than previously thought. Originally believed to only originate from southern Mexico and Belize, it has since been discovered in other areas due to cultivation. These include locations such as South Florida, the Caribbean islands, parts of South America, and various other tropical regions throughout the Americas. Additionally, Vanilla has been found to grow in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Comoros, Bangladesh, Southeast Asia, various Pacific islands, and New Caledonia.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Discover the fascinating history of Vanilla, a flavor cherished for centuries. Used in folk medicine, Vanilla was known to possess aphrodisiac properties and provide relief for indigestion, morning sickness, and joint pain.* Native to Mexico, the Vanilla orchid relies on local hummingbirds for pollination, creating a truly enchanting ecosystem. However, outside its native land, hand-pollination becomes essential to produce the aromatic flowers.

Did you know that Vanilla is the only edible fruit of the orchid? The Totonacs of Veracruz, Mexico were the first to cultivate this sacred herb, using it for rituals, perfumes, and medicine. The Aztecs further enhanced its allure by combining vanilla with chocolate, creating the delicious concoction known as "Xocohotl". The Spanish explorer Cortez was captivated by this exotic drink, leading to the introduction of Vanilla to the European palate. Initially a luxury reserved for aristocrats and royalty, Vanilla quickly gained popularity and became the world's favorite flavor.

The mysteries of Vanilla persisted for centuries until a Frenchman unraveled the secret in 1836. The key to Vanilla pod production lies in the pollination provided by the small Melipona bee, found only in Mexico. As Vanilla spread to tropical regions worldwide, the vines flourished, but the absence of the Melipona bee prevented the growth of the coveted pods. Nevertheless, through the art of hand-pollination, Vanilla production expanded, with the Bourbon Islands in Madagascar becoming the premier growing region. The ones produced in Madagascar and South Africa are based on the Reunion plant strains and therefore a called Bourbon Type.

Experience the allure and enchantment of Vanilla, a flavor that has captivated hearts and taste buds for over 900 years. From its mystical beginnings in Mexico to its global prominence, Vanilla continues to add its romantic essence to culinary creations worldwide.
