About the Plant:
Frankincense is made up of two words: the old French word frank (free, pure, or abundant), and the Latin word incensum (to smoke). When the bark of the tree is disturbed, it oozes out droplets of this precious substance. The beads of gummy resin are meticulously collected and then distilled for their essence.
Frankincense Essential Oils and Abstracts are extracted from Frankincense resin. The way Frankincense is harvested is the Frankincense is tapped from Boswellia trees by slashing the bark (which is called striping) and allowing the resin to bleed out and harden. The resin then hardens and forms what is referred to as tears.
Where It Grows:
Frankincense trees grow in regions of the world that are extremely dry and experience intense sunlight. Frankincense Essential Oil comes from sticky, fragrant resin harvested from the Boswellia tree, which is native to the Middle East. Most frankincense comes from about five species of Boswellia trees, found in North Africa and India, but also in Oman, Yemen, and western Africa. Due to the richness of the CO2 version, Somalia has one of the best sources for Frankincense Carteri processed this way.
Traditional Uses and Lore:

In Christianity, Frankincense is most commonly known as being one of three gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus, alongside Myrrh and Gold. There are several species and varieties of Frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin and essential oil. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species.
This Frankincense Essential Oil is CO2 extracted, and is therefore slightly different from the steam-distilled variety that Amrita offers. Both versions of the oil share many of the same therapeutic benefits. However, the two different extraction processes result in oils with slightly different aromas, colors, and consistencies, and choosing one over the other is a matter of personal preference.
