About the Plant:

Melissa, or Lemon Balm, is a perennial herb which grows up to 3 ft high. It has serrated leaves and tiny white or pink flowers that product a mild lemon scent. Melissa has been popularly referred to as the “Bee Plant” because it attracts pollinators. It is not to be confused with bee balm (genus Monarda); although the white flowers attract bees, hence the genus Melissa (Greek for "honey bee"). The second name, officinalis (Latin, “of the shop”), originates from the use of the herb by apothecaries, who sold herbal remedies directly to their customers.

Melissa’s leaves are used as an herb, in teas and as a flavoring. The plant is also used to attract bees for honey production. It is grown as an ornamental plant and for its oil (to use in perfumery). However, that is not the sole cause of this plant’s popularity. It is most well-known and revered for its soothing, memory-boosting, and anti-depressant powers.*

Where It Grows:

Melissa is native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, Iran, and Central Asia. It grows easily from seed, preferring rich, moist soil making it easily naturalized around the world. As of 1992, Hungary, Egypt, and Italy are the major producing countries of Melissa.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

Melissa, a beloved herb with a rich history, has been used for medicinal and culinary purposes for over a thousand years. From Roman beekeepers attracting bees to their hives to the Victorians finding inspiration in friendship and trust, Melissa has played a significant role throughout the ages.* Early Americans even brought it with them from Europe, using it as a Lemon substitute in baking and preserving. This extraordinary herb even found its way into the gardens of founding father Thomas Jefferson.

Melissa Oil, known as the "Elixir of Life" or the "Nectar of Life" in the 15th century, has long been used to drive away sadness and awaken hope and joy.* Its therapeutic benefits have been recognized and utilized for centuries, from the French Carmelite nuns including it in tonic water in the 14th century to philosopher Paracelsus calling it the "Elixir of Life" in the 16th century. Melissa's history extends even further back, dating back over 2,000 years to the Greeks and Romans.

In the Middle Ages, Melissa was treasured by herbalists, writers, philosophers, and scientists. It was a favorite plant of the Tudors, who scattered its leaves across their floors. English botanist John Gerard recognized its value in attracting honeybees. Melissa made its way to North America with the first colonists and was even cultivated in the Gardens of Monticello by Thomas Jefferson himself.

According to Nicholas Culpeper, Melissa is ruled by Jupiter in Cancer and offers numerous benefits, from aiding digestion to uplifting the heart and mind.* Traditional Austrian medicine also holds the leaves of Melissa officinalis in high regard, using them in herbal teas and essential oils. Experience the timeless allure and therapeutic power of Melissa Oil, treasured through centuries for their remarkable qualities.
