About the Plant:
Sage is a perennial, evergreen herb growing up to 2 feet high, with woody stems and soft, silver, oval leaves. Its flowers are deep blue or violet. It grows in rocky soil often found growing with rosemary. The leaves grow opposite each other on the stem and appear to grow in bunches. When the leaves are rubbed, the oil gives off a fragrance similar to rosemary. These oils are often used for scenting soaps.
Where It Grows:
It is native to Spain and southern France. Many see the similar appearance to garden sage but has narrower, greyish leaves and spikes of purple-blue flowers that resemble French Lavender. Amrita Aromatherapy is proud to have Spanish Sage from Spain.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
In Spain, Spanish Sage Essential Oil is known as quite the “cure-all.” For example, it is believed to promote longevity and protect against infections. The herb is also used extensively in cooking.
Throughout history, Sage has been used for many reasons. The Romans believed it cured just about everything, and the Chinese believed Sage cured sterility. During the Middle Ages, Sage was a well-regarded tonic and was also used in dental hygiene. It can induce urination and menstruation, stop the bleeding of wounds and cleanse ulcers and sores.*

Spanish Sage Essential Oil, also known as Lavender Sage, has a fresh, slightly piney scent with therapeutic properties similar to common Sage. However, it does not have the safety concerns of common sage, as it does not contain ketones. It has few if any known contraindications. It is a useful essential oil to have on hand. Like Lavender, it is known to reduce stress, counter depression, bring calm, relieve headaches and ease inflammation.* However, it contains a compound called sabinyl acetate, which is toxic in high concentrations. Always make sure your Spanish Sage Oil is low in sabinyl acetate. Amrita offers only Spanish sage with a maximum of 2% sabinyl acetate.
Sage Oil may also help hormonal and digestive imbalances as well as soothe sore throats.* It can help promote blood flow to the uterus, reduce excess water retention and bring down a fever.* It can be used as a general-purpose tonic.* The Spanish cook with it and use it to treat diabetes, since Sage Oil may help lower blood sugar without affecting insulin levels.*
The restorative power of Organic Spanish Sage should not be overlooked. This ancient medicine has a long history of use for various health concerns such as headaches, menstrual pain, muscle spasms, inflammation and respiratory infections.* Meanwhile, in the 21st century, studies have found strong evidence of improved cognitive function when using Spanish Sage Oil.*
