About the Plant:
There are hundreds of Geranium varieties hybridized to emit different scents, but Rose Geranium is the most popular and therapeutic. While the Rose Geranium shrub's delicate flowers do not resemble roses, the rosy-scented leaves give Rose Geranium its slightly misleading name.
Pelargonium graveolens is an erect, multi-branched shrub, that grows up to 1.5 m and has a spread of 1 m. The leaves are deeply incised, velvety and soft to the touch. The flowers vary from pale pink to almost white and the plant flowers from August to January. The leaves may be strongly rose-scented, although the leaf shape and scent vary.
Where It Grows:
This shrub is best suitable for light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and prefers well-drained soil. It cannot grow in the shade. Rose Geranium is native to the Northern Provinces of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Currently, Rose Geranium is widely cultivated for its essential oil in Reunion Island, Egypt, Russia, and China. Amrita® Aromatherapy is proud to have Certified Organic Rose Geranium Essential Oil from Egypt.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
The genus Pelargonium gets its name from the resemblance of the shape of the fruit to the beak of a stork. Pelargonium comes from the Greek word “pelargos” which means stork. The species name graveolens refers to the strong fragrance of the leaves, graveolens meaning strong-smelling in Latin. This aromatic plant originated in South Africa. Tribes use the powerful floral aroma to create joyful and exuberant moods. Other cultures have used it for perfumes that spark passion, attraction, and awe. Rose Geraniums have also been used across cultures as a healing remedy.
In ancient times, the Geranium plant, which is known to be antiseptic and diuretic, was used to treat diarrhea and dysentery. It was introduced to Europe in the 17th century. There, garlands of geraniums were often hung around houses to ward off evil spirits, or they were plucked for their medicinal qualities to soothe common headaches and relieve aches and pain. In folk medicine geranium oil has been used as a pain reliever, sedative, antimicrobial, antifungal and to relieve spasms. Geranium has also been used to help with nervous tension and symptoms of menopause. Other folk uses include treatment of wounds, fever reduction, hemorrhoids, gonorrhea, inflammation and diarrhea. Rose Geranium was also used to calm skin conditions such as eczema, burns, acne, bruises, and cuts.
Some weight loss and body building supplements include rose geranium oil as an “active ingredient.” There are no studies that demonstrate that rose geranium oil can help you lose weight or build muscle, although it might help you to regulate your blood sugar. Today, the plant also began to symbolize romance and became a popular gift amongst lovers and it was also used in wedding decorations as a symbol for love and faithfulness. The unmistakable rosy and sweet aroma is often used in aromatherapy too for relaxing the mind and spirit. Rose geranium oil is contained in lots of cosmetic products, including soaps, fragrance, lotions, and anti-aging cosmetics.
